Candles are an economical way to revitalise an area in your home. Their radiant aura, subtle scents and vivid colours enhance the ambiance of any room.

Although lovely to look at, candles can be dangerous if not properly used. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (1998), 56% of candle-related injuries resulted from candles burning unattended. To ensure you and your family are safe, follow these simple guidelines.

Before Lighting

  1. Ensure candle is in a proper holder. If your candle does not come in a container, place it in a holder specifically designed for candle use.
  2. Place candle on a sturdy, heat-resistance surface that is away from drafts. Air currents and unlevelled surfaces can promote rapid burning, sooting and dripping which can be hazardous and may reduce the life of your candle.
  3. Trim wick to 1/4" before lighting. Long wicks can cause excessive flames which may result in uneven burning and dripping.

While Burning

  1. Never leave a burning candle unattended. Stay within sight of your candle at all times. If you leave the room, extinguish the candle and re-light it upon your return.
  2. Keep out of reach of children and pets. The glow and flicker of the flame can be alluring. Keep your family safe. Keep candles out of reach.
  3. Never burn a candle on, or near anything, which can catch fire or objects that radiate heat. Combustible materials, especially clothing, hair and furniture, can catch fire quickly. Always be cautious near an open flame.
  4. Never move or touch a burning candle. The liquefied wax that pools at the top of the candle or within the holder can burn if it comes in contact with skin. Allow a candle to cool and re-solidify before moving it to another location.

When Extinguishing

  1. Discontinue when wax is 1/2" from the bottom. Burn a candle for no longer than 4 hours at a time and discontinue when 1/2" of solid wax remains.
  2. Use a candle snuffer to extinguish the flame. A candle snuffer prevents wax from splattering and the wick from bending.
  3. Never use water or any other liquid to extinguish the flame. Water can cause the wax to splatter and other liquids may catch fire. Always use a candle snuffer.

These are basic guidelines to help you enjoy the beauty of candles in your home, but before lighting any candle refer to the manufacture's instructions as they may vary based on the type, size and style of candle you have purchased.
